Ballet + Boxing for Ordway from Maribeth Romslo on Vimeo.

The Art of Boxing – The Sport of Ballet springs from the partnership between the St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym.
Their shared performance is an interactive experience that crackles with energy, blurring lines and illuminating the grace, athleticism and common rituals of ballet and boxing. The performance, fundein part bThe Knight Foundation Cultural Opportunity Fund, springs from the unusual partnership between the St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym that is sure to challenge stereotypes as it bridges seemingly disparate cultures and demanding physical pursuits. The St. Paul Ballet’s Artistic Director Zoé Emilie Henrot and Element Boxing Director Dalton Outlaw choreographed the performance as aninteractive experience that highlights the common rituals of ballet and boxing.

The partnership between St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym began organically as the St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym shared common space with dancers and boxers, working and training side by side. The partnership evolved as the two groups learned more about their common goals to transform lives, build community and to provide access to high quality programs in an inclusive, diverse community. The organization’s leaders, both passionate about their craft, also see in the partnership a unique opportunity to bring cultures together. Together, the organizations serve more than 500 individuals every year and hope to reach many more.

In 2016, St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym were one of 27 organizations selected to receive the Knight Arts Challenge award, which funds the best ideas for engaging and enriching communities through the arts in four U.S. cities: Akron, Detroit, Miami and St. Paul. Their first major joint performance last October received enthusiastic support from a diverse audience with audience members calling their collaboration“transformative” and “life changing.”

The Partnership

The partnership between St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym and Boxing began organically as the St.

“St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym’s partnership is a model for finding our common humanity,” said Dalton Outlaw, executive director of the social Element Gym and Boxing, a social benefit corporation. “To support our youth, we need more places where they can be supported in an inclusive, welcoming environment and be exposed to different role models and opportunities. We have already learned so much from the partnership but mostly, our boxers see the art in what they are doing – and we’re very impressed with the strength and training of the dancers.”

The Performance

What started as two different organizations sharing a common space grew to become a group of people that shared a common vision. The Art of Boxing. The Sport of Ballet., put on by the partnership between the St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym, is a performance and an exhibition that explores the similar beauty behind the movement and preparation of the dancer and the athlete.

With the help from our friends at the Knight Arts Challenge and the Knight Cultural Opportunity fund, a national program committed to engaging and enriching communities through the arts, this performance uses SPB company members and professional athletes from Element Gym to create an experience that highlights the grace, dynamism and shared rituals ingrained in the art of ballet and the sport of boxing.

Created by St. Paul Ballet Artistic Director Zoé Emilie Henrot and Element Boxing Director Dalton Outlaw, The Art of Boxing. The Sport of Ballet. is a community event and performance created from a common vision to build equity, inclusivity and community through the art of movement.

Whether you come for the boxing, the ballet or both, this event is a truly unique cultural experience that pushes the boundaries on what we do and do not perceive to be art and sport in the modern athletic culture.

Make sure to experience The Art of Boxing. The Sport of Ballet.

More about St. Paul Ballet and Element Gym

St. Paul Ballet and Element Boxing & Fitness became neighbors in 2014 when SPB expanded its programming into the Hamline-Midway neighborhood of St. Paul. For the past three years, both organizations have discovered shared values, including a deep sense of commitment to their community, a passion to increase access to underrepresented and marginalized populations, and a desire to promote physical and mental wellness. An incredible partnership has blossomed, and both organizations are excited to collaborate on this project.

Element Gym & Fitness

Dalton Outlaw founded Element Gym & Fitness in 2012. Guided by strong values and a committed vision to building a diverse and strengthened community, Element is leading the way for social innovation and economic development. From the beginning, Element has embraced its Hamline-Midway neighbors and exists to promote active and healthy living, shared collaboration, hard work, and dedication. Element is a benefit corporation: a for profit business with a social mission.

St. Paul Ballet

St. Paul Ballet was first established in 2002 and has built a reputation for artistic excellence in dance performance, education and outreach for all levels or dance experience. A staple in the St. Paul community, the organization strives to better reflect the beauty and diversity of its host city. St. Paul Ballet is guided by the belief that beauty is much more than body type and nurtures its students and company members as people first, dancers second.
