Student Performance Opportunities

SPB provides opportunities for students to learn and perform choreography from the classic repertoire as well as new works created by and for SPB. Opportunities may include student performances, workshops, lecture demonstrations and full length performances which include the professional dancers of SPB.

The experience of rehearsing and performing for audiences at any age enables students to develop confidence and stage manners, which is essential to their pre-professional training. Participating students are coached by SPB faculty, company and guest artists.

School of St. Paul Ballet Spring Showcase, Stars of the Future
The O’Shaughnessy at the College of St. Catherine’s

Friday, May 11, 2018 at 7:00pm
Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 1:00pm

This annual celebration of our students gives our community a glimpse of the talent and dedication of our student dancers. Their energy and vitality are on display in the always evolving classicism that has been beloved for centuries, infused with and informed by, contemporary dance and the world in which we live.

Students of the Full-term Programs of SPB are given the opportunity to perform in the School of St. Paul Ballet Spring Showcase. The performance develops discipline, musicality, endurance, choreographic memory and stage presence.

Ballet is very much a marathon and not a sprint. It takes about ten years for children to learn the full curriculum of ballet’s technical goals: turnout of the hips and legs, a vertical torso, lengthened lines, highly articulated feet and legs. Equally important is learning to use movement to powerfully communicate the dancers’ values, thoughts, and aspirations.

As audience members, you are acknowledging and nurturing the next generation. By performing for you, students have the opportunity to find their artistic voice. Ballet is not meant to be a historic recreation but a living, breathing art that transcends language and touches the core of what it means to be human.

Join us Friday, May 11 at 7:00pm and Saturday, May 12 at 1:00pm.

A Holiday Fête (Cast B of Clara’s Dream, Levels 3-6)
Celebrating the Joy of the Season

Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 2:00 pm
East Ridge High School, 4200 Pioneer Dr, Woodbury, MN 55129

Tickets may be purchased online on the EMSO website by following the menu on the top of the page for UPCOMING CONCERT.

Featuring excerpts from Clara’s Dream performed by students of the School of St. Paul Ballet with professional company dancer Michelle Ludwig as “Clara.”

Joining EMSO in the celebration will be students of the School of St. Paul Ballet, performing excerpts from Clara’s Dream, a ballet set to music from Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, The Nutcracker. The performance will star professional company dancer Michelle Ludwig as “Clara,” who will be accompanied by student dancers ranging from upper elementary to high school age. “We are thrilled to give our ballet students the rare opportunity to perform with a full symphony orchestra,” says Laura C.C. Greenwell, director of the School of St. Paul Ballet. “Having worked with EMSO in years past, I know this experience will enrich our students and delight our audience.”

The program will be rounded out with holiday musical classics including an audience sing-a-long. A meet-and-greet with orchestra members and student dancer along with refreshments and treats will immediately follow the performance. “Whether you enjoy classic ballet, familiar holiday music, or an old-fashioned sing along, this joyful program has something for everyone,” notes Elizabeth Prielozny Barnes, EMSO music director and conductor. “The relaxed and inviting nature of EMSO programs means that this holiday classic will appeal to all, perfect for a special family gathering!”

PARENTS: In addition, there are new parent/guardian volunteer opportunities for the East Metro Symphony Orchestra weekend December 16-17 in Woodbury! We are seeking parent volunteers from any SPB level to assist as dressing room parents, back stage, bringing costumes and flooring to East Ridge High School, as well as other opportunities. This is a great alternative opportunity if you have a conflict with volunteering during the “Clara’s Dream” dates at the O’Shaughnessy. We also welcome and encourage parent volunteers currently signed up in other volunteer shifts who are willing to give extra hours for the EMSO weekend. December 16 is dress rehearsal with the orchestra, and December 17 is the performance. New volunteer dates are listed online at signup.com. For any questions please email Emily Schmall at eschmall@spballet.org.
