Technique Intensives (ages 13+ with at least 3 years ballet experience dancing en pointe)


SESSION 2: August 11-22 Monday 10:00am-3:00pm | Tuesday, Thursday 10:00am-3:00pm |Wednesday, Friday, 11:30am-4:00pm. Ballet technique and pointe with Karen Paulson Rivet and Zoe Henrot as well as modern with Preston Stockert. Parents are invited at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, August 22 for a short program. Cost one week $365, both weeks $690 


Karen Paulson Rivet began her early training in St. Paul with the Andaházy School of Ballet and has been a classical ballet instructor for more than 32 years.  Karen spent considerable time augmenting her training with classes from Gabriela Komleva, Luba Gulyeva, Marina Stavitskya, Carol Roderick, Michelle Lucci, and Ted Kivitt. She was previously on the faculty of Saint Paul Ballet until 2005 in the roles of ballet instructor, Director of the Performing Ensemble, choreographer and repetiteur. Karen’s teaching background includes Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, Ballet Arts Minnesota, Minnesota Dance Theatre and Continental Ballet among others. She is in high demand in the Twin Cities as a Master Teacher.


Karen performed with the Andaházy Ballet Company, Saint Paul Ballet, Continental Ballet and Minnesota Dance Theatre in ballets including but not limited to Scheherazade, Pas de Quatre, Les Sylphides, The Golden Bough, Coppelia, Cinderella and The Nutcracker Fantasy. While on the faculty of Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists(SPCPA) and Minnesota Dance Theatre, Karen staged and choreographed multiple classical, character and contemporary works.  Her full length ballet A Christmas Carol, The Ballet was created for Saint Paul Ballet in 2004 and was featured in St. Paul and St. Cloud.  Karen continues her pedagogical work in teacher seminars with Carol Roderick of Colorado State University, DePaul University, Oberlin College and the Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia as well as conferences with Minnesota Dance Medicine Foundation.


Zoé Emilie Henrot graduated summa cum laude from Mount Holyoke College in 2012 with a B.A. in Dance and Biological Sciences. Zoé received her early dance training at The Boulder Ballet School, becoming an apprentice with the company in 2007. She has also trained with Kansas City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Joffrey Ballet and has worked with prominent choreographers such as Peter Davison, Ana Claire, Jim Coleman, Terese Freedman, Rose & Charles Flachs, Kinsun Chan, and Diane Coburn-Bruning. In November 2012, Ms. Henrot was invited as a guest choreographer in the Five College Dance Department in Massachusetts to restage her work ‘Becoming Undone’. Her most recent work, ‘Gray Matter’, premiered at the Southern Theater as part of the Minnesota Fringe Festival in 2013. Zoé was named the Artistic Director for the 2014-15 SPB Season.


Preston Stockert graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BFA in Dance. He began dancing as a child recreationally and eventually became an avid member of the competitive dance circuit. After years of studio hopping and traveling for his dance education, at age 18 he moved to Minneapolis to gain a stronger grasp on his art form. Since then he has worked with companies such as Haus of John-Mark, Continental Ballet Company, and Cities Classical Dance Ensemble and choreographers Makeda Thomas, Laura Janson, Katherine Krieser, Matthew Janczewski, Ori Flomin on behalf of Stephen Petronio, Germaul Barns on behalf of Arnie Zane, Carl Flink, Ananya Chatterjea, Penelope Freeh, Holly McCaffrey on behalf of Kari Jensen, Zoé Emilie Henrot, and others. Preston is an SPB Company member.

SESSION 1: July 14-25 Monday 11:00am-4:00pm | Tuesday, Thursday 10:00am-3:00pm |Wednesday, Friday, 11:30am-4:00pm. Ballet technique and pointe with Master Teacher, Lirena Branitski, as well as modern and jazz with Nina Joly in residence with the SPB Company for two weeks. Parents are invited at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, July 25 for a short program. Cost one week $365, both weeks $690

JULY 21-25 Ballet Portion of Intensive with Lirena Branitski: $290 (NO drop-in classes)

Lirena Branitski was born and trained in the former Soviet Union. M. Branitski was first soloist of the Kiev State Theatre of Opera and Ballet and a frequent guest performer on the stage of the famed Bolshoi Theatre. She became a touring member of the Bolshoi Theatre concurrently with renowned ballet dancer Mikhail Barishnikov. She has performed on stages throughout Europe, Canada and South America. M. Branitski has a vast performance repertoire of soloist and principal roles in both classical and contemporary ballets. She has performed under all the master Russian choreographers, including the world-renowned Peter Gusev, Vakhtang Tchabukiani, Raisa Struchkova, and Alexander Lapauri. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1980 M.Branitski taught at her own school as well as Minnesota Dance Theater. From 1989 to 2006 M.Branitski taught and choreographed at Ballet Arts Minnesota. At Minnesota Dance Theatre & the Dance Institute, she teaches technique class, and coaches company dancers in classical repertoire. Her direct link to Russian classical ballet technique, repertoire and character dance is a rare privilege for SPB this summer. In 2012, she was the recipient of the Special Citation at the 2012 SAGE Awards.

 Nina Joly from northeastern Connecticut, began her dance training at age three and began teaching/choreographing full-length community musical theater productions as a high school student. At Mount Holyoke College, Nina danced under Jim Coleman, Terese Freedman, Daniel Trenner, Debra Vega and Jennifer Weber, and earned a B.A. Magna Cum Laude & Phi Beta Kappa in American Studies. Nina’s work has been at the American College Dance Festival, Check Us Out Dance Festival, and the Mount Holyoke College Faculty Concert. Nina is performing and choreographing for Foxygen, Jagjaguwar Records, and can be seen this month onstage at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, CA. Nina restage her 2010 piece ‘Twins’ for SPB in “Bella Luna.”
